For the most part I think they are ground from the same material, I do know that solid cam lobes are shaped different than hydraulic cam lobes. Solid cams are built to "knock" the lifter off the cam at beginning and end like pdq67 said but when you put hydraulic lifters on it they collapse and dig into the side of the lobe as I understand it.
