Accidents[edit] In April 2013, at least 17 people were killed while mining illegally at a disused gold mine in Ghana's central region. The ground reportedly caved in on the miners as they searched for gold deposits, and authorities were unclear as to how many miners originally went in. Sixteen bodies were excavated, with one man dying in hospital from his injuries.
Eight out of the 13 large-scale mining companies in Ghana are major gold companies. Furthermore, more than 300 small-scale mining companies operate in the country. The mining communities on the other hand are not a formal institution but primary and legitimate stakeholders in terms of representing the areas where the mines are located.
In Ghana, the mining sector is a major contributor to GDP attracting significant investment inflows of about USD 11billion between 2006 and 2017 (Minerals Commission, 2018) and contributed about GHS 2.16 billion and GHS 2.36 billion in tax revenues in 2017 and 2018 respectively (Chamber of Mines, 2019).
